Step by step

From shaping to the final fit.

Illustrations only. Every case is different, and results differ from person to person.

  1. Consultation and X-ray

The dentist checks the tooth and explains why a crown is recommended. You hear the plan and the cost at your consultation, before anything starts.

  2. The tooth is shaped

A crown covers the whole tooth, so more of the tooth is shaped than for a veneer. The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic while it is shaped.

  3. A digital scan

The shaped tooth is recorded with a digital scanner. No impression putty is used.

1 · A small camera is passed over your teeth2 · Your teeth appear on screen in 3D
  4. A temporary crown

You wear a temporary crown for about one to two weeks while the final one is made. The shade is chosen with you.

  5. Fitting

The final crown is fitted over the tooth and checked.

When a crown is recommended

Four common reasons.

The dentist explains which applies to you, and whether a filling or a veneer would do instead.

A badly broken or worn tooth

When too little tooth is left for a filling to hold.

After a root canal

To protect a back tooth after root canal treatment.

On top of an implant

The visible part of a dental implant is a crown.

To change shape or shade

As part of a smile makeover.
