Consultation, scan and X-ray
A digital scan and a panoramic X-ray show whether aligners suit your teeth. Some cases move better with braces, and the dentist will say so. You hear the plan and the cost at your consultation, before anything starts.
Attachments and your first trays
Small tooth-coloured attachments are bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip. Then you are given your first trays.
Wearing them
You wear the trays about 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush.
A new tray every one to two weeks
You change to the next tray as the dentist instructs, and come in for a check-up every six to eight weeks. Most treatment takes about six to eighteen months.
Retainers
When your teeth have moved, you are given retainers to hold them in place.
Living with aligners
What changes in your day.
Aligners only work while they are on your teeth, so most of the effort is yours.
Most of the day
About 20 to 22 hours a day. The more they are out, the slower the teeth move.
Out to eat and drink
Take them out to eat and to drink anything other than water, then brush before putting them back.
Fewer clinic visits
A check-up every six to eight weeks, with new trays changed at home in between.
